Types of Malware Infection and Removing Malware

Malware or malicious software, is becoming an epidemic. It’s everywhere and it’s out to get you. It seems almost everyone has had problems removing malware at some time or other. In fact, just a few days ago the Australian Cyber Securities Centre released a warning for Windows users that a malicious code called BlueKeep is on the rise. Thousands of small to medium business across Australia are infected with malware each year, and each year the number is increasing at an alarming rate. So, what’s it all about and where can I get a flu shot for my PC?

The Many Types of Malware

Malware comes in many guises. Its effects range from redirecting you to fake websites to locking you out of your own computer data until you pay a ransom. Let’s have a look at the common ones out there:

Ransomware:  This type of virus is designed to encrypt your data until you pay a ransom. Last year saw thousands of businesses affected by WannaCry, Bad Rabbit, and NotPetya.

Spyware: A virus designed to allow access to webcams and microphones. It’s common practice these days to put a bit of tape over your webcam. Even Zuckerberg does it.

Virus: A broad term for malicious code that slowly invades all of your files. Sometimes it deletes them but often just leaves file corruption in its wake.

Worms: These are a very common form of nasty code. They can spread across networks chocking bandwidth and corrupting files.

Trojan Horse: Just like its namesake from Troy, this is malicious code made to look legitimate.

How can I Prevent a Malware Infection?

Firstly, exercise caution when downloading or clicking on anything. This goes for Phishing emails too. They may look legit but it’s all ways worth checking. Secondly, install a firewall as the first line of defense. Finally, install anti-virus software and keep it up-to-date.
